Battery Extraction System Case Study
|
Where?
Large retail supermarket chains all have a distribution centre where their produce is stored
before it is loaded on to trucks and then shipped out to the respective branches. These centres
usually involve a lot of heavy lifting and carrying and so the use of fork lift trucks is necessary
because of the weight and size of stock that is moved in & out of storage and loaded on a daily basis.
What?
These fork lift trucks are battery operated, which is a hugh benefit because:
|
1) They promote a greener working environment because the fork lift trucks are not run by burning gas or petrol,
which reduces carbon emissions. Companies are improving their awareness of ecological issues all of the time and
so it is always good to see a company promoting the environment in their workplace.
2) In a busy environment like a distribution centre it is important to manage time effectively and efficiently.
This is a perfect example of how our work helps companies improve that efficiency by ensuring they can continue to
use their existing methods and practices without any underline issues.

Why?
The particular type of batteries which power the fork lift trucks are ecologically friendly but also potentially
dangerous because of the waste products given off during a standard recharging cycle. They produce the highly flammable
hydrogen gas whilst the batteries charge, which on its own isn't too much of a hazard. There are however risks that if
multiple batteries are charging at once, it is possible for a dangerous enough build up of the gas, which could ignite and
cause a fire.

These batteries contain sulphuric acid which produces hydrogen gas when they are being charged up or are discharging energy. Being a highly combustible gas,
hydrogen needs to be safely extracted because of the potentially dangerous, high quantities which can build up. When hydrogen is mixed with oxygen it becomes highly explosive
and so anything as simple as a spark or flame can ignite the gases.
