Monumenta 2011: Grand Palais, Paris
|
 |
Location: Grand Palais, Paris
It isn't often that you get to apply your expertise and knowledge to something which will influence so many people worldwide and you
would rarely hear the words 'ducting' and 'artwork' in the same sentance.
That all changed when we were asked to design, manufacture and install the ducting for a piece of artwork, which is arguably one of the most exciting
jobs we have ever done!
|
|
As if it wasn't enough to be installing the ducting for a giant piece of art work that is forty metres tall, the actual site and gallery where this enormous
spectacle was to be displayed is the Grand Palais, Paris. Due to this prestigous location it was (luckily) important for our team of fitters to actually
be on site in France to install the ducting before this 'Leviathan' could be completed.

The main concept behind the 'Leviathan' is inflation as well as maintaining pressure levels. This is why the ducting we built and installed
was paramount to the structure because it was designed to fully inflate the giant balloon and maintain it's shape.
As you can see, the images show the structure before it was fully inflated but also show that the entire work of art is in fact one machined piece of rubber.
|
Due to the distance of travelling to and from Paris and the time taken to do so, it was important to maximise our time on site to ensure we fully understood the entire
situation to help us avoid any problems whilst installing the system.
We only needed the two proposed trips to the Grand Palais as we were well prepared for the job and had everything organised. We spent a day on site in Paris to first measure
up the proposed system, which needed installing as soon as possible for the upcoming exhibition. The second trip was spent on site, installing the ducting and was completed in just four days!

This particular piece of artwork has been chosen for the Monumenta 2011 art exhibiton, which is slowly becoming an annual event. The event started in 2007
and has been an active event four times since then. A leading artist is invited each year to display some of their works in the Grand Palais, Paris.
