How To Deal With Dust In The Air

Although it may not seem like it, having dust in the air can lead to serious health problems in the long term. It can irritate air passages and cause breathing issues such as coughing, sore throats and potentially asthma. Dust particles can be difficult to see, as it’s not that evident unless it’s on a surface but there are ways that you can help to remove dust that occurs in the air as well as potential long terms solutions.

Vacuum The Dust In The Air

This may sound a bit odd considering you use the vacuum to clean surfaces and floors, however, if your vacuum has a filter it can greatly improve the reduction of dust particles in the air. If you were to point a desk lamp or small light in the air near the vacuum hose, you’ll notice the dust in the air being sucked up by the vacuum. For the best results, work your way around the room in small sections starting from top to bottom. The vacuum exhaust should also be kept away from the area you’re working on to prevent air movement.

Attract The Dust In The Air Through Static

Static electricity can easily attract dust particles in the air and DIY ‘dust catchers’ can be created in your home to help remove dust from the air. You’ll simply need the following:

  • A Hanger
  • A Balloon
  • A Cotton Item Of Clothing Or A Bath Towel
  • A Fan If Available

In order to create the dust catcher, follow these simple steps:

  1. Place the item of clothing in a hanger or fold the towel on to the horizontal wire of the hanger
  2. Rub the balloon over the outer area of the item of clothing or towel
  3. If possible, hang the item near a fan. If you don’t have one available, place it somewhere within the room that is fairly open
  4. Turn the fan on to a low speed with the item hanging on it, and it can begin to attract dust within the air to the item of clothing because of the static that it’s been covered in.
  5. You can then leave the items of clothing there overnight and then wash it to remove the dust, before repeating the process.

Purchase An Air Purifier

The quickest solution to removing dust in the air is through an air purifier. Just be sure that the filter inside is clean to prevent further dust from entering the air when you turn it on. It can be placed in the middle of the room and turned on for a few hours to completely filter the air but there are features such as the size of the air purifier and noise level that should be considered in your purchase. If they’re too small they may not collect the dust amounts necessary, and noisy purifiers won’t be pleasant to have turned on for long periods of time.

These solutions are ideal for small offices or homes, but these issues can also relate to large industrial commercial spaces also. In order to overcome dust issues within a factory or large industrial workspace, it’s ideal to fit in a dust extraction system.
